About

‘Songs to the North Sky’ will be released from 2nd June.

Download from iTunes exclusively from 26th May

For years now, Tim Garland’s playing and composition have less reflected ‘influences’ than styles he has mastered – everything from Celtic music to Yellowjackets fusion, from free improvisation to classical performance, from ECM ‘third stream’ to left-field electroacoustics. As a composer, he uses his native eclecticism and phenomenal technique to make telling and often surprising connections; as a bandleader, he creates spaces in which other musicians will surprise themselves. Songs to the North Sky unites these two strands of his career in one remarkable project. After two years in the making between much international touring and time away from the UK, Garland celebrates ten years of “Lighthouse Music” and a deserved place once again as band leader.

Performance

Since the early 1990’s Tim Garland has been touring extensively throughout Europe and latterly worldwide as saxophonist for Chick Corea’s Vigil. With numerous recordings to his name as well as appearing as sideman, Tim Garland is one of UK’s prolific performers and and world class instrumentalist.

Composition

Commissions

‘There is no one who can more convincingly unite the jazz and European classical music idioms’. THE OBSERVER

Garland has fulfilled commissions from several of the worlds top orchestras, two commissions from the LSO, The Royal Northern Sinfonia, the CBSO, the City Of London Sinfonia and BBC Concert Orchestras. Concertos for saxophone and other instruments continue his work into mining the fertile ground of where composition can take jazz. He has also created a series of symphonic reworking for Chick Corea, (the Grammy winning, The New Crystal Silence) and Jean Luc Ponty, as well as expanding John Patitucci’s bass concerto. Works for the Royal Holloway Choir, the London Voices, and even a commission from the Catalan National Cobla group show the breadth of his writing skills, often inspired by, but not limited to, the jazz idiom.

Audio Network & Film Music

Garland is a founder member of Audio network and has written a wide variety of music for use with picture, conducting orchestras at Abbey Road, Angel and Air Studios London, as well as many big band sessions. His “Candle On The Moon” studio being his base, constant source of inspiration, and meeting place for editors and directors. He created the underscore music for 26 episodes for the History Channel and works with independent film director Howard Webster.

Sideman

Chick Corea

Chick Corea’s Vigil features the modern-day monster of bass, Carlitos Del Puerto, creative force Marcus Gilmore on drums (carrying on the lineage of jazz from his grandfather, Roy Haynes), saxes, flute, bass clarinet and innovation from Tim Garland and a rising-sun (although from the west coast), guitarist Charles Altura. Stay vigilant.
